Is it possible you could become a local celebrity? Lets review the case for Kelvin Brown.

Kelvin Brown live on Washington DC radio, enjoying his share of local fame.

Kelvin Brown started working with me on the internet in 1998. In 1999 Kelvin Brown started his own city portal for the Washington DC area.

Kelvin started contacting local businesses about a free listing in the local city portal and started getting noticed and making good contacts.

Because of his new connections, and the spotlight the portal put on Kelvin, he is now on the air at WOL 1450 AM in Washington D.C. with a radio show called "Small Business and Internet". Kelvin has a web site you can view here.

In Kelvin's own words:

"The radio thing came about because of consulting a potential client that happened to be in radio. I met this client through my local city portal."

I asked Kelvin if he is ever recognized around town from his picture on the city portal, Kelvin said:

"I went to hear a motivational speaker, Willie Jolley, who had been a client of mine. He was speaking in Virginia, he happened to mention that one of the guys that helped him with his web site was in the audience (me). Someone said, "I thought I knew you. Don't you have your picture on a web site?"

I then asked Kelvin if there were any other advantages the city portal brought him that he had not expected, Kelvin said:

"One is i can walk into any business in town, and ask questions. When you walk into a business as a portal owner you can usually get a few seconds to introduce yourself."

"I have started doing this more in just the last 3 weeks. I have been invited for a free meal in a new restaurant opening up."

"Also, I have been invited as a guest at a cultural center opening. I was talking to a famous publisher of who's book I had read nearly 10 years ago. But I did not recognize it. I called later to give him a couple of pointers. And I took his picture to include on one of my blogs."

Finally, I asked Kelvin if he had any advice for new city/town web portal owners:

"I recommend the local portal owners carry a small digital camera. People love the thought of free publicity especially with a picture of them or the shop."

Portal Director may sell advertising for Portal Director's assigned portal to any person, business, or area in the world. Portal Director understands that no other entity can sell premium listings for Portal Director's assigned portal without the permission of Portal Director. Portal Director understands that other Portal Directors may sell advertising to any person or business in the town with the same name as Portal Directors portal. Only one portal will be built per town. Portal director has control of assigned portal.
