Many people have the mistaken idea that if they build a website for their business
it will automatically be seen by the millions of people on the internet. This is
simply not the case.
Most people use search engines such as Yahoo, MSN, Google, or others to find what
they are looking for on the internet. If your website is not indexed inside
these search engines you have no chance of being found via that route.
The search engines have no magical way of knowing that you have built a website.
The only way they know you are there is if you submit your website to them
or if they find you because someone else has linked to your website.
Even if you are found or submitted to a search engine, it could be 6 months to
a year or longer before your website is indexed and available to be found
by searching.
But even at this time there still may be no traffic to your website because
you are competing with thousands, or hundreds of thousands, and in many cases
millions of other websites with similar content. If you are not on the first
few pages of a result you might as well not be listed at all. Odds
are your website will be hundreds of pages back when anyone does a search for
content on your website, if not thousands.
Other methods of getting traffic to your site such as links from other websites,
or advertising can be tedious, expensive, and still produce very little results.
