What could I do better with this photograph?
The photo was taken at Inniswood Gardens Metro Park located in Westerville Ohio. Please visit http://www.fstop2image.com/butterfly.html
and let me know what I should have done different with this shot as well as the website itself.
Thanks

Your composition needs improvement. Look up “rule of thirds” on the internet. You have too much deadspace around the photo.

Yeah, crop the negative space from the bottom completely, and partially from the top, then crop a little from the right side, so that the photo is more horizontally oriented than vertically.

Hmm…besides the cropping and stuff…maybe a touch lighter, and a bit sharper….

Well, first, do you like it. What would you do to change it?
It would be nice to see what the original was like, to compare to your posted shot.
As for the “rule of thirds” comments. Thats generally for newbys that have no idea how to set up a shot by themselves.
There are no hard set rules for composition. Merely suggestions.

The deep green background is very distracting and there is a lot of open space. Try cropping it a bit.

crop so the butterfly isn’t so dead center…put her in the “golden mean” (off center and a bit low)

Compared to all of your other really great photography, it is simply too flat for me. Part of that is due to a very dull colored butterfly but that is not it’s fault. I would just chalk this one up as not one of your keepers and keep trying for a better angle, overall focus, etc. It might look better cropped and in black and white.

If the original has the end of the piece of grass the moth is on, I would crop it show it shows and the moth moves to the right a bit. However, if that is not the case, then I think the only thing you need to do is maybe crop a bit off the top and”blur” the background a bit more. I think it is a nice photo and congratulations on actually getting a flighty subject like a moth when it is standing still.
